Innovative Risk Management and Safety Consulting & Training

Johnston & Associates, Inc. was founded in 1990 by Ron Johnston with the goal of providing behavioral based loss control services to decrease occupational injuries and lower claims costs. Ron developed The M.O.S.T. System and S.O.S. System as loss control methods that were easy to understand and apply for client companies, and to address the most common causes of accidents and injuries. In 1997, his daughter, Larisa Featherstone joined the company full time after graduating from Emory University. Through her early work conducting claim audits she developed Johnston & Associates unique claims management model that addressed what was lacking in the industry.

Our safety systems, combined with claims management with low caseloads and superior customer service, proved to be a successful total risk management solution for clients. Over the years, ancillary claims services including RN Case Management, Medical Bill Review, and Medical Canvassing were added to the boutique services offered by Johnston & Associates through Compass Managed Care Services with the same focus on fast turnaround and cost containment for clients.

In late 2005, Ron and Larisa met Corey Lile, the president of OccuSure Workers Compensation Specialists. Corey had always been frustrated with the typical insurance model of claims management and learned that Johnston & Associates was currently providing to self insured accounts the claims model that he wanted to deliver to insurance company accounts. In 2007, Ron, Larisa, and Corey formed OccuSure Claims Services to fulfill those needs.

Today, Johnston & Associates, OccuSure Claims Services, and Compass continue to work together to provide companies with a unique solution to their risk management challenges through a proactive, customer focused approach.

FOUNDER'S MESSAGE

Ron Johnston and his dog standing outside against truck

"As the founder of Johnston and Associates, I can look back and take credit for starting up the company. However, the credit for keeping it running for the long haul goes to the people who have become a part of it since then.

I am so proud, grateful, and humbled by what Johnston and Associates has become over the past thirty-one years as a result of the dedicated individuals who have built it into the best loss control and claims management company in America. Over the years, clients have frequently said that J&A actually does what our competitors just talk about.

When I first started the company on March 15, 1990, I had a vision of creating an organization based on absolute integrity and always dedicated to doing the right thing. Values like dedication, excellence, responsibility, accountability, honesty, hard work, perseverance, and fairness laid the foundation for our growth. Employees who have these necessary values have made our vision a reality.

J&A developed behavioral-based safety systems based on observations. The highly successful Method Oriented Safety Thinking system (MOST) was developed from the observation that the two main causes of accidents are carelessness and not thinking. Our defensive driving system, SOS (Seeing Obeying Spacing), was created from the observation that the three causes of vehicle accidents are failures in seeing, obeying, and spacing habits. Our behavioral systems are based on real-life observations, and they’re easy to understand, remember, and apply. Most importantly, they work.

I’m so grateful that my daughter, Larisa, worked with me during her high school days and joined J&A full time after graduating with honors from Emory University. As CEO and primary owner, Larisa has grown J&A into the highly successful national risk management consulting firm that we are today.

Our Leadership Team

Community Involvement

Lily's garden logo

At Johnston & Associates, we are proud to support Lily's Garden Childhood Cancer Fellowship at Monroe Carrell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt is a place where the community turns for children's cancer care—a place of compassion and discovery. Through annual fundraising and contribution efforts, we have been fortunate to be instrumental in the creation and continued support of the Lily’s Garden Childhood Cancer Endowed Fellowship which supports a pediatric fellowship in oncology. This cause is one that is close to our hearts and has helped to drive our success so that we may give more.

Lily is the daughter of our CEO, Larisa Featherstone, and the granddaughter of our company Founder, Ron Johnston. Lily was first diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia at age 7. Her doctor explained that leukemia cells were like weeds that crowd out the flowers in a garden. Lily received chemotherapy in order to kill the weeds so that only healthy flowers would grow in “Lily’s Garden.” At the age of 15, Lily relapsed and went through treatment for the second time. Her leukemia is now in remission and she is enjoying college in her quest to be a pediatric oncologist.
